An extraordinary pair of Italian Murano glass wall sconces dating to circa 1930s - 1940s, combining delicate blown glass shades with dramatic rostrato glass detailing.

Each sconce features a wide, softly scalloped clear glass shade punctuated with controlled air bubbles, crowned by a dense collar of hand-worked rostrato glass. Developed in Murano during the Art Deco period, the rostrato technique creates a highly textured surface of individually pulled glass peaks, giving the sconces their wonderfully jewel-like, almost crystalline appearance.

The exuberance of the glass is offset by wonderfully restrained metal wall mounts, creating that particular tension between decoration and modernism that Italian lighting does so well.

Origin: Italy.

Era: c.1930-40s.

Attribution: Unmarked; in the manner of Barovier & Toso.

Materials: Hand-blown Murano glass, rostrato glass and metal.

Dimensions: DIA 21cm X H19cm

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with wear and patina consistent with age. Minor variations, bubbles and irregularities within the glass are characteristic of its handmade production. No cracks or chips. Patina wear to metal fixtures.

Use: A spectacular statement pair for either side of a mirror, artwork, bed or doorway.

Notes: Sold as a pair. Rewired by a licensed electrician to Australian electrical standards. Professional installation by a qualified electrician is recommended.
