Condition & Attribution Reference Guide

This guide is provided as a reference to help customers understand how condition, age, and attribution descriptions are used across the Penny Lomas website.

Most pieces offered are vintage or antique, meaning signs of age and use should be expected and are often part of their character.

Rather than repeating long condition explanations in each listing, product pages may reference this guide instead.

1. Condition Ratings

Unless otherwise stated, all pieces are vintage or antique and will show some degree of wear consistent with age. Occasionally, contemporary or newly made pieces are offered. These will be clearly described in the listing and should not be expected to show age-related wear.

Excellent Condition

The piece shows minimal signs of age or use. Any wear is minor and does not detract from the overall appearance or function.

Typical characteristics may include:

  • Light surface wear

  • Minor patina

  • Subtle marks consistent with age

Good Condition

The piece shows normal signs of age and previous use, but remains structurally sound and fully functional.

Typical characteristics may include:

  • Surface marks or wear

  • Minor chips, scuffs, or small imperfections

  • Patina or fading consistent with age

These characteristics are generally considered part of the piece’s charm.

Fair Condition

The piece shows visible signs of age or wear and may include repairs or restoration. However, it remains usable and stable.

Typical characteristics may include:

  • Noticeable wear or imperfections

  • Repairs or restoration work

  • Surface inconsistencies

  • Areas of wear consistent with long-term use

Pieces in fair condition are often chosen for their form or rarity rather than perfect surface condition.

2. Restored or Reupholstered

Some pieces are restored or reupholstered prior to sale. Where applicable, this will be noted in the product listing.

Restoration may include:

  • Structural repair

  • Refinishing

  • New upholstery or textile work

  • Replacement components where necessary for stability or usability

Restoration is undertaken to extend the life of a piece while respecting its original character.

3. Customised or Modified

Some pieces are occasionally adapted or customised prior to sale.

This may include:

  • Replacing shades or fittings

  • Updating finishes or textiles

  • Modifying components for practical use

  • Adapting a piece to suit contemporary interiors

Theses adjustments are undertaken respectfully, with the intention of extending the usefulness or versatility of a piece while maintaining its original character,

Where modifications or customisation have been made, this will always be noted in the product listing.

4. Electrical and Lighting

Vintage lighting pieces are often rewired or updated for safe contemporary use.

Where applicable, lighting may include:

  • Replacement wiring
  • Updated fittings or components
  • New switches or plugs
  • Modifications to meet modern electrical standards
Unless otherwise stated, buyers should have all vintage lighting installed and checked by a qualified electrician prior to use, as electrical standards vary by location.

Any electrical updates or replacements will be noted in the product listing where known.

5. Artwork Signatures & Attribution

Some artworks may include visible signatures, initials, or markings attributed to an artist or studio.

Where possible, these markings will be described or photographed in the product listing. However, a signature alone does not always guarantee authorship, and formal authentication or provenance documentation is not always available for vintage works.

Artwork is offered based on its aesthetic and decorative value rather than as an investment or authenticated collector’s piece, unless explicitly stated.

Buyers are encouraged to purchase artworks based on personal enjoyment and suitability for their space.

6. Age Descriptions

Circa (c.)

“Circa” indicates an approximate date or period rather than an exact production year.

Example:

c. 1970s means the piece likely dates from around the 1970s period.

Dating vintage items is often approximate due to incomplete historical records.

7. Attribution & Design Descriptions

Attribution language follows common international antique and vintage trade terminology.

By

The piece is believed to have been designed and produced by the named designer or manufacturer.

Attributed to

The piece is believed to be by the named designer or maker, but definitive documentation is unavailable.

In the Style of / In the Manner of

The piece reflects the style or design language of a particular designer or movement but was not necessarily produced by them.

After

The piece was made later and inspired by a known design.

These distinctions are industry standard and help describe aesthetic lineage when direct authorship cannot be confirmed.

Studio made

The piece is believed to be produced by a small workshop or artist's studio rather than a large known manufacturer. Studio-made pieces are often produced in limited quantities and may show subtle variations, evidence of handwork, or individual finishing differences, making each piece slightly unique. Documentation or individual maker identification may not always be available, particularly for mid-century or regional studio production.

8. Variations & Imperfections

Vintage and antique pieces may include:

  • Surface wear

  • Patina

  • Colour variation

  • Minor chips or marks

  • Evidence of previous repairs

These characteristics are not considered faults but part of the life of the object.

Buyers seeking factory-perfect finishes may find vintage items unsuitable.

9. Certification & Provenance Disclaimer

Penny Lomas is not a licensed antique valuer or authentication authority.

Pieces are sourced from reputable dealers, auctions, estates, and private collections both locally and internationally. Information regarding origin, age, and attribution is provided based on available dealer or auction descriptions and research where possible.

Formal certification or provenance documentation is not always available for vintage items.

Buyers are encouraged to purchase based on appreciation of the piece itself rather than investment or attribution certainty.
