Geometric Burl Wood Folk Art Jewellery Box, c.1970s

A wonderfully tactile vintage folk art box, painstakingly decorated in hundreds of individually cut geometric wood blocks.

Alternating timbers create a patchwork of honey, caramel and deep brown tones, with the natural grain incorporated into the pattern. Each small block has been faceted into a pyramidal form, giving the otherwise simple rectangular box an extraordinary three-dimensional surface that shifts with the light. Finished with an ornate brass-tone clasp, it sits somewhere between jewellery box, folk craft and small-scale sculpture.
