Lavender Plexiglass Oval Mirror, Italy, c.1970s
"Dear Mirror, please be kind".
A beautifully restrained vintage Italian oval wall mirror, c.1970s, framed in softly tinted lavender plexiglass and attributed to the Harvey Guzzini house. The translucent surround creates a subtle halo of colour around the mirror glass, shifting between smoky lilac, mauve and pale violet as the light changes throughout the day.
Its simple oval form and minimal construction are characteristic of the experimental use of plastics in 1970s Italian design, where colour and material do much of the work. Rather than behaving like a conventional frame, the lavender plexiglass seems to float around the mirror, giving an otherwise pared-back piece an unexpectedly playful edge.
