Pair of Memphis Geometric Wall Sconces, Europe, c.1980s
Like origami, if origami listened to Depeche Mode.
A pair of sculptural 1980s wall sconces in black metal, formed into sharp geometric planes that project dramatically from the wall. With their exaggerated triangular silhouette and wonderfully severe profile, they have all the hallmarks of postmodern and Memphis-era design - graphic, architectural and just a little bit menacing. The black finish keeps them surprisingly restrained, while the angular construction creates beautiful shifts of light and shadow across the surface. Excellent flanking a mirror, artwork or doorway, or equally good separated where a room needs a little tension.
