Green Glass Vase with Appliqué Leaf Relief, France, c.1970s
Big boned. And not apologising for it.
A wonderfully tactile vintage glass vase in deep emerald green, decorated with oversized appliqué-style leaves in pronounced high relief.
The cylindrical body is densely embossed with a rough, almost hammered texture, while large smooth leaves project dramatically from the surface. The contrast between the glossy raised motifs and heavily textured ground gives the piece an almost sculptural, collage-like quality - less a pattern printed into glass than decoration built up across it.
Particularly beautiful in changing light, the substantial green glass moves between translucent emerald and near-black, exaggerating the depth of the embossed surface and the exaggerated botanical forms.
Chunky, strange and unapologetically decorative.
